What to wear for the wedding: Bridesmaid Style Advice

Alice is our resident Bridesmaid Style Advisor and, as this is when you start planning the outfits for your summer weddings, we thought it would be useful to share her thoughts on choosing bridesmaid dresses.

‘Congratulations if you’re getting married soon or if you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid! Here are some thoughts to bear in mind when you’re looking for the perfect bridesmaid dress.

The first question I always ask is what’s the style of the wedding? Vintage inspired, contemporary chic, rustic romance – the dresses need to work with the overall style of the event and obviously, compliment your own wedding dress whether structured, ethereal, or classically elegant.’

The location and time of wedding also plays a part for example, an evening wedding in a stately home may lend itself to full length gowns,  whereas a daytime countryside affair may be more suited to 50s prom style dresses.

It is highly likely that your bridesmaids will suit different styles of dresses and, we’re noticing a trend towards wearing different styles in similar or complimentary colours. This means that you can select something that really suits the shape, age and style of each individual bridesmaid and make sure that everyone is totally happy with their look on the day. There’s no need to worry that the bridesmaids may be mistaken for guests, if wearing different colours, as the bouquets will pull the look together.

Weather considerations? If it’s going to be cool in the evening you’ll want to check out bolero tops or even a warmer cover-up for a winter wedding.

The best type of shoes are mid height heels for comfort or higher heels with a flat (but beautiful) alternative for later, this avoids the bridesmaids dancing barefoot when the blisters appear.

If buying jewellery for your bridesmaids is starting to tip your wedding budget then let them know the style you’re thinking of and share your jewellery collections with each other, then at least you’ll all be wearing something borrowed!
