Family weddings from the 50s, 60s and 70s

To mark the start of the wedding season, we've been looking at photos of family weddings from the 50s, 60s and 70s and finding out about these very special days.

David Benton and Rhona Carabine

1970s wedding: The bride & groom....
Rhona Carabine and David Benton were married on 28th December, 1974 in Stubbings, Berkshire.
The proposal....
He kept asking her and she didn't take him seriously. He was persistent until finally she realised it wasn't all a hilarious joke.
The dress....
Epitome of the 1970s with a high neckline a wide sleeves, costing a grand total of £16. A home made victorian style posy and Juliette cap completed the outfit.
The event...
A small family affair at the brides parent's house, with a buffet including sausages on sticks and bridge rolls.

Susan Pegg & John Barker

1960s wedding: The bride & groom...
Susan Pegg & John Barker were married on 12th April 1966 in Tipton, West Midlands.
The proposal....
A romantic affair, down on one knee at the medical school rugby club dance.
The dress...
A traditional 1960s style dress with a lace top and sleeves with a satin pencil skirt. Bought with her mother, "without any fuss in those days, we just went out and bought one". Susan had a bouquet of pink roses and lily of the valley.
The event...
The wedding ceremony was held at a Catholic church in Tipton, West Midlands, and the reception at a local country club. A  pianist entertained the guests and played 'Fly me to the Moon' which, became their song.
Susan changed into her going away outfit, which was made for the event, a black crepe dress, cream jacket and bombe hat, before heading off on her honeymoon.

Ronald Carabine & Dorothy Vickers

1950s wedding: The bride & groom...
Dorothy Vickers and Ronald Carabine were married on 28th July 1951 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The proposal....
As Ronald was planning to leave the country for work he said....'well I'm not going on my own, you'll be coming with me'.
The dress...
A muted mauve, crepe dress with a white hat and peep toe shoes. Dorothy kept it in her wardrobe for decades but sadly,  no one knows where it is now.
The event...
A group of 20 friends attended the event at a yacht club, they had a meal and speeches after champagne on the terrace.

Freda Smith and Eric Stevenson

1950s wedding: The bride & groom....
Freda Smith and Eric Stevenson were married on 18th July, 1953 in Aston, Birmingham.
The proposal....
Details are unknown but they met and fell in love while on holiday in Weymouth, during the summer of 1952.
The dress...
Homemade by Freda and her mum in satin brocade with Lily of the Valley pattern, sweetheart neckline, covered buttons and pointed cuffs. She adapted the pattern so that it was exactly how she wanted it. Freda carried on the tradition by making her daughter in law’s wedding dress.  
The event...
A dinner reception for 40 was held at the Holte Hotel and guests travelling from Nottingham hired a bus from the Skills bus company to take them there.

    Il love to see how the fashions changed
    My bouquet was yellow roses and lily of the valley, and we were married on July 18th not 19th.
